When is the best time of year to see the aurora in Yellowknife?

Aurora season runs from late August through mid-April — any night with darkness and clear skies is a candidate. The peak months are December through March, when nights are longest (up to 17 hours of darkness) and skies are most stable. September and October offer a great balance of cold nights and manageable temperatures. We're currently near solar maximum in the 11-year solar cycle, meaning aurora activity is at its highest in a decade — there's never been a better time to visit.

What does the aurora actually look like in person?

Far more dramatic than photos suggest. The human eye sees the aurora in real time — the dancing, rippling curtains of light moving across the sky. Strong displays fill the entire sky with green, purple, and red light that shifts and pulses within seconds. Even a moderate display is breathtaking. Your guide will help you understand what you're seeing as it happens.

Can you guarantee we'll see the aurora?

The aurora is a natural phenomenon — it depends on solar activity, clear skies, and conditions beyond anyone's control. What we can guarantee is that we'll monitor forecasts obsessively, drive up to 40km from city lights to find clear sky, and stay out as long as conditions allow. Yellowknife's high aurora frequency gives you excellent odds over a multi-night stay.

Question 5

What is the KP index and how does it affect the tour?

The KP index (0–9) measures global geomagnetic activity — the higher the number, the more intense and widespread the aurora. In Yellowknife, even a KP of 1–2 can produce a visible display. Your guide monitors KP forecasts, solar wind data from NASA satellites, and local cloud cover before and during every tour to maximise your chances of a great show.

How is pricing structured?

All pricing is per vehicle, not per person. The Aurora Chasing Tour is $85 CAD per hour; the City Tour is $80 CAD per hour. Up to 4 guests share the same vehicle rate, making it excellent value for groups. There are no hidden fees — vehicle and fuel are included.

How far in advance should I book?

Accepted Answer

We recommend booking as early as possible during peak season (December–March), as availability fills quickly. That said, we happily accept last-minute and same-day bookings when space is available — WhatsApp is the fastest way to check. If you're flexible on dates, we can also advise on which nights look most promising based on the forecast.

What is your cancellation policy?

Accepted Answer

Cancellations more than 48 hours before the tour: full refund. Cancellations within 48 hours: a 27.89% cancellation fee applies and the remainder is refunded. No-shows are non-refundable. If we cancel due to severe weather or unsafe conditions, you receive a full refund or the option to reschedule at no extra cost.

What happens if the weather is bad on my booked night?

We monitor conditions closely and will contact you in advance if conditions look poor. For aurora tours, cloud cover is the main concern — we'll drive to find clear sky when possible. If conditions are genuinely unsafe (blizzard, extreme cold warning, dangerous roads), we'll cancel and offer a full refund or reschedule.

How do I pay?

Payment is due at the time of the tour unless otherwise arranged. We'll confirm payment details when we confirm your booking.

How many people are on each tour?

Accepted Answer

Maximum 4 guests per vehicle. These are private tours — you won't be grouped with strangers. The small group size means a more personal experience, better photo opportunities, and the flexibility to stay longer at the best spots.

Where do tours depart from?

We pick you up from your hotel or accommodation in Yellowknife. Exact pickup details are confirmed when your booking is finalised.

How long are the tours?

Aurora tours have a 3-hour minimum — this gives enough time to drive to dark-sky locations, wait for activity, and experience a proper display. Most guests choose 4–6 hours. City tours typically run 2–3 hours. You can discuss duration when booking.

Question 14

What should I wear?

Accepted Answer

Dress for extreme cold. Yellowknife winters regularly reach -30°C or colder. Layer up: thermal base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a heavy insulated parka on top. Insulated boots (rated to at least -40°C), warm gloves or mittens, and a hat that covers your ears are essential. Hand warmers are a great addition. Your guide will remind you, but it's worth preparing before you arrive.

Can I take photos? Will my guide help?

Absolutely — photography is a big part of the experience. Your guide will help you set up your camera or smartphone for aurora shots. Modern smartphones (iPhone 14+ and most Android flagships) work well in night mode. For DSLR/mirrorless cameras, your guide will walk you through manual settings: ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. Bring a tripod if you have one.

Are the tours suitable for children?

Yes, with appropriate preparation. Children need to be dressed very warmly and should be comfortable with late nights and cold temperatures. We recommend discussing your group's needs when booking so we can plan accordingly.

What is the Ice Road Tour?

Accepted Answer

The Dettah Ice Road is one of the world's most famous ice roads — a public road built each winter across the frozen surface of Yellowknife Bay. We drive it when conditions allow, offering a genuinely unique experience. The ice road is seasonal and subject to official opening/closing decisions by the Government of the Northwest Territories.

What is the Bison Tour?

The Wood Bison Tour takes you to see wild wood bison — a species once nearly extinct, now thriving in the NWT. These are massive, wild animals in their natural habitat. The tour runs in summer when bison are most active and accessible. It's a completely different experience from the aurora tours and a highlight for wildlife enthusiasts.

What is the Cameron Falls Tour?

Accepted Answer

Cameron Falls is a stunning waterfall along the Ingraham Trail, set in the rugged Canadian Shield wilderness just outside Yellowknife. We drive you out ($130 CAD one way) and, on a return booking ($250 CAD), your guide waits up to 1.5–2 hours while you explore. Your guide can also hike the trail with you, share the area's history, and help with photos. Note: there is no cell service at Cameron Falls — it's a true off-grid experience.

Can I combine tours?
