Your guide has spent years immersed in the aurora borealis β not just as a natural spectacle, but as a scientific phenomenon. What started as a personal fascination became a mission: to share the northern lights with travellers who've dreamed of seeing them their entire lives.
Every tour is personal. With a maximum of four guests per vehicle, you're not just another face in a crowd β you're a guest on a private expedition. Your guide monitors aurora forecasts obsessively, knows every dark-sky spot within 40km of Yellowknife, and will be right there to help you capture the perfect shot.
The aurora isn't just beautiful β it's one of the most fascinating natural phenomena on Earth. On tour, your guide will share the science behind what you're witnessing in real time: why it moves, why it changes colour, and why Yellowknife is one of the top three aurora viewing locations on the planet.

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories sits directly under the auroral oval β the ring-shaped zone around Earth's magnetic poles where aurora activity is most intense. Combined with long, dark winter nights, low light pollution, and a subarctic climate that produces exceptionally clear skies, Yellowknife is consistently ranked among the top three aurora destinations on Earth.
Yellowknife averages over 240 nights per year with aurora activity β more than almost anywhere else on Earth.

What causes the aurora?
The aurora borealis begins 150 million kilometres away β at the sun. Curious about the full story? Your guide will walk you through it live, under the lights themselves.
Why green? Why purple?
The colours you see depend on which atmospheric gases are excited and at what altitude. The answer is more surprising than you'd expect β and far more memorable when you're watching it happen above you.
Why does it move?
Those rippling, dancing curtains of light are responding to real-time changes in solar wind and Earth's magnetic field. Your guide will explain exactly what's driving the show as it unfolds.
How do we predict it?
Aurora forecasting is part science, part experience. Your guide monitors KP index, solar wind data, and cloud cover before and during every tour β and will share what the numbers mean in plain language.

Group & solo portraits
Want a photo of yourself or your group with the aurora behind you? Your guide will set up the shot and take the photo for you β so everyone gets to be in the picture.
The best moment, captured
Your guide knows when the lights are peaking and will make sure you're ready. You focus on the experience β we'll make sure you leave with photos worth sharing.
Dress for the cold. Yellowknife winters regularly reach -30Β°C or colder. Dress in multiple warm layers β insulated boots, gloves, a hat, and a heavy parka are essential. Your guide will remind you, but it's worth preparing before you arrive.
